Scorpion pose

The yogi: Jomon Devassy

The location: Kerala, India

The pose: A variation of the Scorpion (aka Vrschikansana)

The benefits: There’s no doubt about it, this is a tough pose. For many, it takes months and even years of practise to master. But once you can do it, you’ll feel like a superhero. There are a multitude of benefits including strengthening your core, arm and hand muscles. This pose also elevates the heart rate and encourages perseverance. The Scorpion requires much mental focus and helps to quieten the mind, create vitality and tame the ego. Pretty awesome!

About the yogi: Jomon has been teaching Hatha, Ashtanga and Dhyaan (meditation) yoga for the last seven years. He qualified at Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, a renowned yoga university in Bangalore, India and has since trained under a Himalayan master. At the moment, Jomon does a form of dynamic yoga for private clients in Dubai. “My yoga journey began after my mum passed away when I was 18. When someone close to you passes away, you begin to question life and what really matters to you,” says Jomon. “Yoga has cleansed my mind and given me a sense of peace. It’s part of my lifestyle now. It’s also given me a fit body. My favourite asana is the Scorpion because it gives you the feeling that you can conquer the world.”Jomon, who recently celebrated his 27th birthday, aspires to travel the world to expand and spread his yoga knowledge.
