MINDFULNESS MONDAYS

10 foods to boost your libido

Stress can ruin your sex drive. According to doctors, stress decreases the production of adrenaline which is a hormone that triggers sexual desire. The food you eat also has a direct impact on your sex life. Here are ten aphrodisiacal, tantric-inspired foods to get you in the mood…

1.Pomegranate
According to Greek mythology, the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, planted the first pomegranate tree. Pomegranates are one of the most fervent fruits when it comes to enhancing sexual desire. The seeds are symbolic of fertility and help the body to produce nitric oxide, which intensifies blood flow and arouses your sexual organs.

2. Bananas
Bananas contain an enzyme called bromelain enzyme and this helps to boost levels of sex drive. This potassium rich fruit also contains B vitamins like riboflavin, which are awesome if you’re after more energy. This tantric-inspired fruit is worth eating on a regular basis.

3. Avocados
In Mayan cultures, this fruit was viewed as a potent aphrodisiac. The Aztecs dubbed the avocado tree, the ‘ahucati (meaning testicle!) tree’ since avocados contain many nutrients that incite sexual excitement. These include beta carotene, folic acid, magnesium and vitamin E and B6.

4. Almonds
Ancient folklore regards almonds as fertility symbols and for good reason. These nuts are a fabulous source of essential fatty acids and vital for the production of hormones. Almonds are said to have an arousing effect in women and men. These energy-boosting nuts are even more effective if you eat them raw. I recommend sprinkling some crushed fresh almonds over your salad.

5. Figs
Figs are the oldest recorded fruit on our planet and they are known to heighten our pleasurable senses. High in amino acids, apparently they also increase your sexual stamina. So, you can’t go wrong with a fresh sweet and juicy fig!

6. Garlic
Garlic is packed with an ingredient called allicin, which increases blood flow to the sexual organs. Of course, the odour isn’t so appealing, although if you remember to carry some mints, that might solve the issue. Otherwise you can always pop some garlic capsules instead.

7. Chocolate
Dark chocolate contains raw cocoa, also known as the food of the gods. Besides being rich in antioxidants, the magnesium in dark chocolate helps to relax the body. It also contains two key chemicals – phenethylamine and tryptophan – they get the brain to produce serotonin, the mood elevator associated with sexual arousal. No wonder the taste of chocolate is so euphoric!

8. Basil
In Italian folklore, sweet basil is meant to attract husbands to their wives. Apparently certain compounds in basil boost our blood circulation, triggering a feeling of increased sensuality.

9. Asparagus
Asparagus spears, which are rich in vitamin E, have been viewed as an aphrodisiac for centuries. Their suggestive shape might give that away! They are mentioned in the Kama Sutra and a 17th Century English herbalist once wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.”

10. Olives
Who knew seductive powers existed inside an olive? According to the ancient Greeks green olives were thought to make a man more virile while black olives were believed to increase desire in women. Whatever the case, you can’t go wrong with an olive or two!
