MY FAVOURITE INDIAN DISHES

Sarah Bladen & Dhanraj Poojari

As some of you already know, one of my favourite Indian restaurants for casual dining is Sukh Sagar. From Southern delicacies to Punjab specialities and Indian-Oriental combinations, there are several super tasty options. Best of all there is a wide range of fresh (sugar-free) juices at amazingly wallet-friendly prices –plus, you can even custom-make your own mocktails.

I caught up with the owner of Sukh Sagar, Dhanraj Poojari (over several plates of delicious dishes) and to my delight, he told me that he’s revamping their menu so that it will be even more health-conscious for 2015. Besides including several diabetes-friendly dessert options, each dish will list the number of calories as well as the health benefits.

As you already know, spices like saffron, turmeric, clove and cumin are fantastic for the immune system. However, with the introduction of sugar-free desserts, this soulful vegetarian restaurant, which is due to open across Canada, is set to go global…

Here are my top five favourite Sukh Sagar dishes:

1. Mysore Masala Dosa

I love this rice and lentil pancake (a South Indian delicacy) – it’s layered with red garlic chutney and has a slightly spicy kick.

2. Dal Fry (Yellow Dal)

I can’t get enough of yellow lentils cooked via this secret homemade recipe. Slightly spicy and full of vitamins, this side dish is a classic.

3. Paneer Tikka Masala
This barbecued cottage cheese cooked in spicy gravy garnished with cream and cashews is irresistibly yummy. And cream is a healthy fat don’t you know!?

4. Chilli Idli

When it comes to the Indian-Chinese combos, I’m captivated by the Chilli Idli – a fusion dish of South Indian Idli cooked with Schezwan sauce – a real treat!

5.Fresh Fruit Juice

I love fresh orange juice, freshly squeezed lemon juice and fresh ginger – this is one of my own zingy creations – you can ask the waiter to make whatever you fancy! There’s also a wide selection on the menu from kiwi to strawberry and grape and Ganga Jamuna Saraswati (pineapple, orange, mosambi).

Enjoy!
